Behind the Books

When Life Gives You Lululemons

August 30, 2019

Debbie and I both enjoy listening to audiobooks. Listening to books allows me the pleasure of multitasking. I can listen while I’m cooking, driving, in between appointments, or in any of the times where you can’t pick up a physical book. No matter what time of day, reading a book makes me tired, it strains my eyes and I typically can’t stay focused for long. I can consume more books in a month by listening to them on audio. I recently listed to When Life Gives You Lululemons by Lauren Weisberger and wanted to share my thoughts on this very witty and entertaining book!

I was so ready for a great snarky read.  I’d recently purchased this on a $5 Audible deal.  (I buy so many of my audiobooks when they are on sale).  Since I so enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada, I figured I’d get a kick out of this book as well.  I was three quarters of the way through listening before I realized this story was the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada.  It wasn’t until Miranda Priestly makes an appearance do all the pieces fall into place.  Of course it’s been a half dozen years since I read Devil Wears Prada, but as soon as I made the connection the story got even juicier.

The story follows three women – Emily (former assistant to Miranda), Miriam, a long time friend and Miriam’s friend Karolina.  Karolina is a former Victoria’s Secret cover model married to a Senator who needs Emily’s skill as an Image Consultant immediately.  Both Karolina and Emily steal away to Miriam’s house set in the Suburbs of Greenwich, Connecticut so that Karolina is out of the lime light of her drunk driving fiasco.

The characters are so hilariously over the top I found myself laughing out loud.  And yet there are true issues each woman must face with courage and tenacity.  The juxtaposition of family and career life create a colorful story you are sure to love.

Share in the comments below if you’ve listened or read this book! I would love to hear what you think!
