My book, Cottage by the Sea, was inspired by a major landslide in Oso, Washington in 2014. Having such a tragic and life-changing event happen so quickly, randomly, and so close to home left a mark on my heart. As I followed the subsequent news stories surrounding this tragedy and the loss of forty-three lives, I began to put myself in their shoes, particularly those who were left behind to mourn. The depth of loss and grief must have been incredibly difficult for these families. From this, I began to build a plot around a lone survivor who wasn’t home when a mudslide took her entire family.
As a writer, I couldn’t help wondering about family members who weren’t at home at the time—those who escaped death only to be left behind. My heroine lost her entire family and is now alone in the world, seeking out a place she can call home. And isn’t that what we’re all searching for—home?
I hope you enjoy Cottage by the Sea, and that it brings you hope for reclaiming the light after darkness.

May 22, 2018 at 2:29 pmWhile we see these things on TV and in the news we can’t relate because we can’t see them physically or have had it happen to us but when we have something tragic happen we know that others who have been through something know what it is like. I have not been through this, we suffered with severe flooding and were without water for 10 days, our city was under water in many areas so travel was also restricted. Sad to watch the disasters unfold around this world.

He makes us stronger when we go through a tragic situation. God is Good all the time.

May 22, 2018 at 3:48 pmI connect with this book having lost all our family on my and husband’s side at an early age. My parents lived with us and died from complications of alzheimers. My husband’s father was shot down as a fighter pilot when husband was 16 yrs old. His Mama died at 59 from colon cancer. His 3 brothers died tragically. One from colon cancer, another drowned, another had heart failure from complications of diabetes. They were all young. Our church is our family now and we praise God for the wonderful family we have made there. Thank you for your wonderful books. They put a smile on my face whilst I fall asleep at night. Gloriana

May 22, 2018 at 4:32 pmHi Debbie,
I just wanted to take a moment and update you on my Husband who I had mentioned in the past. I have read your books as inspiration during this time. He recently had a spinal surgery which leaded into a infection that entered his Cerebral Spinal Fluid. He is home now and I am still reading your books to enjoy a moment of quiet time. You are a true inspiration and I hope you will enter me into your drawing. I am from a small town in the Ozark Mountains but I very much enjoy reading your Blogs and Books. I look forward to your new book Cottage by the Sea.
Sincerely,

May 22, 2018 at 5:11 pmHI, I’ve been reading Debbie Macomber’s writings since ?? However long since she’s been published writer. My Sister & I often share the books, talk about the stories we’ve so much enjoyed. As I get older I’ve forgotten some of the stories details. So when I come across a book of her’s I buy it and read it again. I open the pages with excitement of reading her books again. At age 65 I’ve been since enjoying reading novels since “Gone with the Wind” om my early teens. Married young, at 19, had our babies at 25 & 26, and still found time to read while they napped. Read to all the Day Care children in our home. Now reading to our Grandchildren. Books decorate tables and 4 bookshelves in our home. Books and Love of reading, my Husband & 2 sons and now their children will always we a love we all seem to have. Thanks to Debbie Macomber we’ll always be reading daily for the rest of out lives.

May 22, 2018 at 5:40 pmI feel like this is a must read for me. My friend and quilting teacher, Nichole, did lose her parents, daughter & daughters boyfriend in this horrific tragedy. I’ve often wondered what strength it must take for her to get out of bed each day. She’s somehow learned to continue on and move forward with her life. You always have a loving take on situations in life. I look forward to finding out how your characters deal with the same situation and I’m sure will somehow find a way to rise up with the help of friends and family.

May 22, 2018 at 5:40 pmAs we grow older we lose family members, which is hard enough. I’ve lost an Aunt and my 3 cousins in a very tragic accident. It was devastating. It’s been 4 years and some days it seems like yesterday. Can’t imaging losing some many you love.

May 22, 2018 at 5:52 pmThis is the first time I have been on this blog and it is so encouraging. I am certainly going to think about journaling – especially gratitude journaling. I already keep a prayer journal. I also already spend time with Jesus every day reading my Bible and praying. I have not yet managed to read the through in one year -it usually takes me three years. I also feel inspired by what you said to start writing my autobiography. I have not always had an easy life because of long term health problems including polio, uveitis (eyes), Caroli’s disease (liver), insulin controlled type 2 diabetes, 11 different conditions in total, yet I can honestly say God has been gracious and faithful through it all.

May 22, 2018 at 5:54 pmI am anxious to read this book. From your comments on this book, it reminds of the tragedy in Cerritos, CA, not far from where we used to live. May 22, 2018 at 6:04 pmMy 90 year old neighbor, now deceased, got me hooked on what I refer to as my “Debbie” books. She loaned over 60 of her books to me to read and return. Since Ms. Morrison passed away I’ve been on my own and haunt the grocery store book section for releases I haven’t read. We are a small town and have no book store, but I’ve found a used book store in Tullahoma, TN who has a few of the “Debbie” books which I haven’t read. In my 76 years I haven’t won many things. At age 13 a diamond which my parents had to sacrifice to purchase the mounting to put the diamond in and the most precious win was the heart of my husband, RC (me and my RC). We will celebrate 53 years of marriage Sept. 19. I used our local library to read those I haven’t borrowed or purchased. Can’t wait for the release of Cottage by the Sea! I can’t imagine how many enter Debbie’s contests and don’t expect to win. Enjoying her books is a win, win for me! “Debbie keep your stories coming!

May 22, 2018 at 6:19 pmCannot wait to get this and read it.. I know about being the only family member left. I had 2 half sisters and a half brother and they were 15-20 and 25 years older than me so it isn’t like I even remember them being at home and in fact the half sisters were married and had babies of their own when I was born. Now they are all passed on and I am alone except for some half nieces and a nephew. They are not close with me but I am sure they love me.. But I really think I might relate to this woman you have written about. Thanks Debbie for all your wonderful books.

May 22, 2018 at 6:35 pmThank you, Debbie, for sharing how you begin your day. I am a 57 year old Christian woman who has been an empty nester with my hubby. One of our ‘birdies’ is flying back home with girlfriend for the summer to save $ for grad school. I want to model for them a great way to start the day; at least re introduce them to prayer. I look forward to reading your new book this summer. I loved your series with all the knitters!! There’s even a commercial for someone who has breast cancer who holds a knitting group and it reminds me of your awesome books On Blossom Street. May 22, 2018 at 6:45 pmWhat a lovely way to honor these families! Your books always help me through something in my life. Right now we are going through some really tough times that will affect the rest of our lives. My entire family is devastated right now, and reading (re-reading) your books has comforted me like nothing else could. Thank you so very much for helping me through something yet again. You’ll never know how much I treasure you. My mom reads your books too. She is almost 91 years old and in a nursing home. She is in poor health and in constant pain, but your books help her get through the day. We love you!

May 22, 2018 at 7:08 pmSo looking forward to Cottage by the Sea, as it is a reminder of 9/11 here in the New York/New Jersey area. I heard so many stories of the survivors “timing” that morning and to this day I can still remember their stories. Your books always bring me to a better place and I wait patiently for the next one.

May 22, 2018 at 7:11 pmI remember the landslide events well. It was heartbreaking to see how people were affected. My husband and I are Red Cross Disaster Volunteers and R C Service ToThe Armed Forces Volunteers. We have seen and worked with so many families whose lives have been torn by fires, floods, and events of war. Those who have not experienced such a loss cannot really fully understand the impact. We can help a little, but it takes so much for someone to recover. In such a tragedy as your main character experiences, she finds it necessary to completely rebuild her life. It is such a lonely place to be and is something many never really recover from. I look forward to reading COTTAGE BY THE SEA and meeting your heroine.

May 22, 2018 at 8:02 pmDebbie
I rely on my coffee first thing in the morning and then it’s Lady’s turn to be attended to. She is my eight and a half year old black lab. My husband and I got her when she was nine weeks old and she has come to be my most valued companion since the death of my husband. After Lady’s dance with nature, we come back to the apartment, where I enjoy my coffee, talk to God and read my daily meditation books.
Afternoons are for my adventures from you and other authors. I only started reading for enjoyment again after my husband passed away in 2016. We were married for thirty-four years. When we met, I had four children by my previous marriage and he assumed the roll of a father to my four.
I love your books. They give me hope and bring me happiness in every story. Please keep writing. You are my favorite author.
Respectfully
Clair Evans

May 22, 2018 at 8:55 pmHi Debbie
This book holds so many memories. Most of us in Washington State we were unaware of this particular site on a map. However disconnected we may have been. The news brought as much awe and horror to our lives as Mt. St. Helens May 18,1981. You brought us the people behind those pictures and gave us an image of reason, faith and showing us what we could do, can do and will do.
Regards
Marsha

May 22, 2018 at 11:30 pmWow! I can’t wait to read it, Debbie. I’m sure it will become one of my many favorites by you. Your books have brought me such enjoyment, such happiness, such contentment. I wasn’t a reader but then several years ago, someone gave me an extra copy they got of “Mrs. Miracle” told me to read it, and pass it along. Little did I know that would change me….your books, your wonderful stories, have turned me into reader. I have read most of your books now, and many, many, other authors. So, Mrs. Miracle worked a miracle on me, too. God Bless You and all that you do….

May 23, 2018 at 4:41 amI can’t wait to read your tender, heart warming book, “Cottage by the Sea”. I just discovered your books about a year & a half ago, and since read every single one in large print & even small print with my magnifying glass. You are a wonderful writer and you renewed tender, loving memories that I haven’t experience in 12 years since my husband died. Thank you so much. I especially love the books with the brothers & pilots in Alaska, and your series. I felt like they were part of my family and couldn’t wait to see what happens. Because I started reading your books way after they were published, I was very lucky that I did not have to wait for the next installment like other readers did.
May God bless you and your family for your wholesome treasures. Just your cook book I enjoyed and took some recipes but too much sugar and butter for me.

May 23, 2018 at 7:22 amI know a couple people with family in Hawaii right now. They and their families are safe. One of them was talking about the lava being so rich in nutrients. A hundred years after a lava flow has had time to cool, anything will grow in it. This idea keeps germinating in the back of my mind. Lava come from the center of the earth. Probably what God used to create life as he was forming our earth.
God uses our trials to create change in our lives and help us grow. Not easy, but He knows what He has planned for us and it is to prosper our walk with Him.

May 23, 2018 at 12:11 pmHome is where your loved ones are. We recently moved after living in the house our children were born in and 40 years of our married life. We decided to down size and move closer to our children. We asked them how they felt about not coming to this particular house to visit. Their reply surprised us. “Home is where you are!”
My husband is the youngest of nine children. We always hosted all the family gatherings. Several of the family members said it want be the same, but after the first gathering at our new home, they too realized that “Home is where you are.”

May 24, 2018 at 12:48 amCan’t wait to read it. I couldn’t imagine losing my whole family. I lose my oldest brother a month after I graduated from high school. That was 43 yrs ago. I still miss him everyday. Only now over the yrs. I’ve lost many others, I think he was the hardest because he was only 24 and had a young family. Also it was sudden and unexpected. Thank you for the wonderful stories you bring us. I wasn’t much of a reader until my late 20’s. You were one of my 1st and favorite writers.

May 24, 2018 at 5:14 amAlthough I happen to live on the “other” coast, I remember reading all the coverage of the tragic landslide in Oso. I’m a Weather Geek that watches the Weather Channel and I recall they did intensive coverage on air. Plus, I also have a dear friend that lives near the area and this event weighed heavily on our hearts too.
You are absolutely correct that we are always looking for home, at least while we’re alive on this earth. I know that in the future, I look forward to a lovely, heavenly home. Now I really can’t wait to read your latest novel, Cottage By The Sea, now that you’ve shared your inspiration for the story!

May 24, 2018 at 1:04 pmI dearly love your books. Don’t have your cookbook yet but hope to. . I have several friends who have begun reading you over the past years just becuase I gave them 1 book to read and they loved it so much. Of course I am on a fixed income (S.S.) and generally have to get my books at McKays in outer Chattanooga, TN. You buy, read and return for credit to keep on getting more books. Maybe someone will even bring your cookbook in. I’ll definitely be watching. I have kind of a cookebook fettish I guess…..LOL

May 24, 2018 at 5:44 pmExcited to read this new book as I am all of your wonderful stories! I have written 3 children”s books and am having a hard time marking them. When I get frustrated with it, I turn to one of your books and feel at home, among friends and know everything will be okay. Thank-you Debbie for writing stories that make me feel calm and ready to go on knowing I CAN DO ANYTHING!!!!

May 24, 2018 at 6:09 pmI’ve got to get this one and read it! As my family is dwindling in size, my loss is not as tragic as your inspiration for the book but I’m sure I’ll gain comfort through reading how your main character is comforted and how she guided, choices she makes and friends that come into her life. Love your books. Always an inspiration.

May 24, 2018 at 8:43 pmI have read all your books. It is the only collection I will always keep. I figure I’m in my 70s so when my memory starts to go I will be able to start all over and they will be new to be.

Heidi
June 20, 2018 at 9:38 pmHello Gerrie,
All of Debbie’s new books that are published by Ballantine Books, Random House are in large print. If you type in, “Debbie Macomber large print” in the search field on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble it will bring up Debbie’s books. Click the book that you want to purchase on Amazon.com and you will see for example, “See all 11 formats and editions.” Click that and you should see Paperback, Large print. Click it and purchase the large print copy.
Warmest regards,

May 24, 2018 at 10:00 pmWhat a terrible tragedy! I cannot & don’t even want to imagine one like this person experienced.
I do think though that only Debbie Macomber could write a book such as this & be able to bring rays of hope & light to such a sad story. It will be inspirational, like so many of her books are. And I look very forward to reading it.

May 25, 2018 at 12:56 pmLove your new site Debbie, and looking forward to reading all that is here, also love your books. The first book I read was “The Shop on Blossom Street.” which at the time was quite appropriate as we had a small craft group of half a dozen ladies, and one of the ladies had read your book and gave it to me to read and have read 2 others since, but have a few to catch up on. 🙂

May 25, 2018 at 7:15 pmI love reading your books Debbie. I will have to pick this one up “Cottage By The Sea” to read, I can’t imagine loosing your whole family. My family can be a pain and I have had many challenges with them but I still wouldn’t want to loose them. I have already lost a brother to pancreatic cancer, my father to pneumonia and I am dealing with my aging mother with alzheimers . I love my family and will have to read this book to see how the heroine copes with the lost of her whole family. From Jennifer Pitre in Toronto, Canada.

May 26, 2018 at 11:40 amCottage By The Sea will be a definite read, but what book of yours isn’t? I think it takes someone with a mind that thinks just a bit different, just a bit deeper, than others to make a great author. Your point of view that gave birth to this story is the perfect example of that.
Mary Jane
May 26, 2018 at 1:05 pmKnowing the real life inspiration, makes me want to read this even more. Thank you for sharing that.

May 26, 2018 at 2:52 pmI have read many of your books and although I have discovered them in various ways : borrowed from a friend, bought at yard sales or library book sales, or at a thrift store; I enjoyed reading each and every one !
I have wept, laughed out loud while submersed in a plot or character and always turned the last page with a positive time of reflection mixed with… I wish there was more Thank you for your inspirational words !

May 27, 2018 at 3:49 pmI am going to have my tissues ready. I remember watching the news stories, finding where the city was in the state (since I have in-laws in Colville) and just being awestruck with the devastation. We are used to and very aware of the dangers of wildfires in our area but landslides/mudslides are not common. Being the only person in my family left behind…that is a heaviness in the heart. I am really looking forward to reading your latest.

May 29, 2018 at 5:59 amDebbie I just love your books and I look in my favorite store for your latest book then I go get it. My boyfriend tells me to stop buying books because we are running out of bookcases to put them in, so he got me an e-reader and found almost all my books in it , then he gave it to me on Christmas . He donated the paper backs and hard backs to our local library. Now I get to read all my books when I go to the doctors office and not worry about tearing the book cover up.

May 31, 2018 at 2:11 pmI hope I entered the contest correctly. I am 71 and really not too computer skilled. I love reading your boos and have read most of them and now passing them along to all my friends who also love your books. They take you to a time and place and you can zone out all the stress of the day. It would be a dream come true to meet you someday and get an autographed copy of your book. Take care God Bless You Ms. Debbie and keep writing.

May 31, 2018 at 6:36 pmLooking forward to another good read by Debbie Macomber. When I began my journey in journalism, I learned if you begin reading a book and into first 25 pages it doesn’t hold your attention, set it aside and enjoy another book. I have never set aside a book written by Debbie Macomber.
My genre is writing children’s books. I am an avid reader. Debbie really sets a high bar for authors.

June 14, 2018 at 6:17 pmLooking forward to reading! I spent a relaxing long weekend at a delightful (very small) B&B in Oceanside – I always wanted to stay on the Oregon Coast, but wanted to avoid the very touristy ‘beaches’. It was wonderful & restorative! My hostess even made a special afternoon tea for me when I told her of my fondness for tea and sweets/savories! Wonderful memories.

July 12, 2018 at 5:05 pmI can take days to finish other authors’ books but there is something about a Debbie Macomber story that makes me unable to put it down until I am finished. After reading the story “behind the story”, I can’t wait to read Cottage by the Sea. Keep the stories coming!

August 7, 2018 at 7:46 pmLoving your books as I do, I left your book to begin as my last. I am much like my mom was. Buying books, reading and getting lost inside the pages. Well, I cannot put this book down. I can feel myself in the town, in the cottage, and I can see the life you are writing and how these characters are alive and drifting from one page to another. I think tonight will be another sleepless night. I actually have to step back and force myself not to read. I’ve dropped it a couple of times, not smart. I love this book, by far one that I cannot help but want to finish but not wanting the journey to end. Thank you.

August 22, 2018 at 8:28 pmJust finished two days of reading Cottage By the Sea. As per usual, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have almost every book written by Debbie In the past 15 years. Once I start one of her books, I cannot put it down and am always looking for another written by her. The Cottage had memorable characters, sad and happy parts, and I loved it. Thank you, Debbie, for the many delightful hours I have spent reading all your books.
