Beach Reading at its Best
Being only a half mile away from the ocean, we spend a lot of time at the beach during the summer months. And while I love sharing the sand and surf with my friends and family, one of my favorite activities is reading.
There are a lot of variables that can make your day in the sun or wreck your whole beach reading experience if you are not prepared. It has taken me some time to perfect my routine, but now that I have it down, I’d love to share it with you.

Tote-ally Worth It
Before you even step onto the sand, you need to gather all of your essentials. I find that a tote bag holds everything I need, including: two books, in case I finish the first and I am not ready to leave, sunglasses so I don’t squint at the pages, a hat to protect my skin, a towel or two, snacks, drinks and sunscreen. Other items that might make your must-list could be an umbrella and beach chair.
Location, Location, Location
Find a spot that speaks to you. If you don’t want little ones shouting and running past, sit further up the sand. If you want to dip your toes in the water while you read, head further down shore. Just remember to always be aware of the high tide, no matter where you set yourself up.
Reapply & Repeat
No one wants a book shaped tan line because you fell asleep reading, so remember to reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours. You can also read under an umbrella or sport a stylish wide-brim hat to make your own shade for even further protection.

July 7, 2018 at 7:58 pmThank you for this posting, I’m headed to the Pony Swim at Chincoteague, VA in the end of July and I plan to use all of your suggestions. It might not be the beach but just being out in the sun and waiting for the ponies to cross the channel, so all of these ideas apply.

July 9, 2018 at 5:16 amTo me, there are fewer things more luxurious than time spent by the shore. Reading, gazing out over the water, or watching the waves lap the beach are all worth every minute spent.

Now that summer has finally arrived in the PNW — there are tons of events in every town or city
Have loaded several of your books on my Kindle and take it with me everywhere!

July 11, 2018 at 10:52 pmI live in a rural area in Pennsylvania so mountains surround me. My husband dislikes the heat of summer and prefers a mountainous campground stay in the camper than a beach trip. I have only been to the beach twice maybe three times in many many years. Therefore, I look forward to all your books about living near a beach (plus many others you have written!). I am able to escape into another world an imagine I am the character sitting on the porch enjoying beach or on the beach on a white beach chair under a large umbrella reading. Thank you for this peaceful bliss!

July 25, 2018 at 5:25 pmThe love of my life and I have shared our 50th anniversary this past March also and we have taken mini trips in May, June and July. Always with a book on hand, so when he rests I can relax and read… Cottage By The Sea is on my list to read. It’s already on my spread sheet of Books to Read and need to purchase… As we get older I have created a spread sheet on my books so I would quit buying the same book twice. Living close to Hilton Head and Tybee Island the beach is one of my favorite places to read. I would love a cottage there..
