Gettysburg
I was standing on hallowed ground in Gettysburg. Today Wayne and I walked the site of Pickett’s charge across the open field with Gary Roche, our Civil War guide, and Dale Gallon, a Civil War artist. It was humbling to know that thousands of men fell right where we had walked. I’ve never considered writing historical fiction, but I sure feel the emotion of this battle.

Re: Gettysburg
I toured Manassas civil war site and it was something. I think you could have a story line there at Gettysburg.

Re: Gettysburg
Ditto the idea of a story line. My husband toured Gettysburg battle field and also felt it was hallowed ground.
My great-grandmother's brother (born in England) joined up with the PA Volunteers, in response to Pres. Lincoln's request for more soldiers, instead of beginning his medical studies. He fought in several of the big battles, but at Gettysburg he lost his life. He went into battle on day 2, although he had just received a promotion and wasn't yet properly mustered for his new rank. Because of that, he didn't need to go fight that day, and could have stayed in his tent. But that wasn't his way. I have always felt that he must have been a very special young man to fight for his adopted country instead of following his own interests.

Re: Gettysburg
My husband and I also toured the Manassas site. When my brother-in-law told us that people came and picknicked on the hills that overlooked the battleground, chills ran up and down my back. I could not believe people would come to battle site to watch a battle playing out before them.

Re: Gettysburg
I toured Andersonville with my younger sister 32 years ago. It was fascinating.

Re: Gettysburg
I'm not touring anything!! I'd be too "spooked" to think about all those deaths! To me, i'd be too sad... Kathi

Re: Gettysburg
have ALways wanted to see Gettysburg and Pres Eisenhower's home. Wanted to ask you and your readers to pray for my 10 yr old grandson,Brendan, who has a relapse with his leukemia. Was in remission for 3 yrs. Pray his sister, Haley, who is 6 is a perfect match for marrow. It is crucial. Thanks and sorry to take up this space for this but needed to ask and know Debbie is a Christian and am sure some of her readers are as well. Thanks, Jan

Re: Gettysburg
Debbie, it's my husband's dearest wish to visit Gettysburg. He's read just about every book published on the Civil War and I hope we'll manage to get to the States together next year.

Re: Gettysburg
isn't it great to visit sites of history, the students of today are not taught as much about our past history and it is a shame. From history we learn about our mistakes and sucesses. I felt the same way when I walked the path up in Boston about how the soldiers must have felt, winter, cold, no boots, little food and I know the same conditions existed in the civil war. That seems like an oxymoron, Civil war, there was nothing civil about it. My grandparents came from Kentucky and just barely remembered things the way there were after the war. we have no honor in sending young men into war, we need to pray for our young men and women today, fighting a war on foreign soil, I lived in Turkey for two years and they do think much differently than us and all the little people get caught in between us civilized nations and their country. I will pray for Brendan and do hope his sister Haley is a match. God bless

Re: Gettysburg
My husband, son, and son-in-law spent the day at Gettysburg in May of this year. They kept remarking how big the place is and how many men lost their life there. Seeing it in person made it so much more real.
My daughter and son-in-law had rented a cottage in Intercourse, Pennsylvania for us all to meet (we are in the Midwest, they live near Boston). While they were touring Gettysburg, my daughter and I toured historic antique stores in Lancaster County. :)

Re: Gettysburg
My Husband and I went to Gettysburg in July and I loved it. We did the audio/car tour and spent the day going to all the historic sites. We are originally from Wisconsin so we took extra time to see the sites that listed what Wisconsin had contributed. We live in Baltimore and are so fortunate to have all this history surrounding us. It was a very humbling experience and was proud that the state I was born in was a very big part of this history.

Re: Gettysburg
I am so glad we are planning a trip to Andersonville,in the Carolinas and going to see the prison that was there during the civil war and other things of historic interests. We are actually going on to Dollywood and seeing things in that area that are historic besides the park there. My best friend and her husband are going with my husband and me and she is a history nut like me. I can't wait, we aren't going until Sept 28 and that seems a long way off. I am reading 8 Sandpiper Way and can't put it down to do things I should be doing, just had to let you know, I will be up tonight reading and finishing it, I can tell because I really like this one, of coure, I like the whole Cedar Cover series and so excited about a Christmas in Cedar Cove, thank you, thank you. I take all my faviorite authors out at Christmas and read all their Christmas books and stories, I just love it, makes the holidays seem so great. Now that we don't have children at home it brings more of the holiday mood for me.

Re: Gettysburg
I love history. I would love to tour Gettysburg, but I am sure I would have tears streaming. I am a very empathetic person, so when you say you "felt" it...well I am one of those persons who feel people's emotions and wear it on my sleeve.
Have you done characters in military life in any of your books? If not you should. No one really knows what these people sacrifice. I have a military daughter married to an Army Ranger serving in Iraq. The things they have sacrificed for our country. It is amazing what they and others give up to serve.
I think you really should write a historical slant to your book. It would be amazing. I'm too poor to afford all your books, but the ones I do get are amazing Debbie!

Re: Gettysburg
mama of seven, do you have a library close by or a used book store, I got alot of Debbie's out of print books at a used book store and my friend goes to our local library to get her new books. I just love to buy them and Walmart has a good discount on them

Re: Gettysburg
Wow ... I would LOVE some novels with historical content. Not everyone can go to the places you do and this would be a great way to relay to us what you have experienced. Victoria Holt was my former favorite author (Victorian Gothic Romance) - until I found Debbie's books!! I learned some very interesting things from reading novels with historical and cultural content! Please don't hesitate, Debbie, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is open to that great idea!

Re: Gettysburg
Thanks Marciaelaine, I do have a small town library, but her books are often out...that's a good sign! Everyone loves Debbie. We don't have a used book store anywhere in the county, I live in a very rural area. Thanks for the advice though!
