A Rose is a Rose
I had my first cake decorating class this week. My granddaughter, Jazmine, and I are taking the class together. Really, just how difficult can this be? I found out Tuesday night.
We started off learning how to make decorative roses. Mine, however, show little resemblance to any flower. In fact, they look like artfully arranged bird droppings. I did improve, though, and by the end of the class, if I squinted, I could actually believe that shape on the end of my stick was indeed a rose. I learned that a rose by any other name just might be . . . . something else.

Re: A Rose is a Rose
I was a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher (home economics) teacher in the ole days and I had to take a master's class which was cake decorating. Believe me I know how hard it is to do the roses, some people just have a knack for it, I do not.

I also find that frosting doesn't behave as well as yarn.

Re: A Rose is a Rose
I've been wanting to take a cake decorating class for quite a while now. My goal is to be able to do all the cakes for our church so we don't have to buy them for parties and such. Now I'm not so sure. I wander the aisles of Michael's and JoAnn's and look at all the equipment and I think, my husband will kill me for buying all this stuff when I have a room overflowing with yarn, knitting patterns and needles and crochet hoooks!

Decorating cakes has to be one of my favorite things to do - right after reading a great book! I can't begin to explain how much fun I have creating something beautiful from nothing - not to mention the fact that we get to eat it once it is done!

Cake decorating is one of the things I enjoy but let me tell you, don't let it get out that you do such things. I already have six orders for 2009 graduation cakes!!

Re: A Rose is a Rose
Bless you, my child, I would never have the patience for such things. I'd have it so messed up you wouldn't even know that there was a cake somewhere under there !!! I'm now convinced that you are a woman of MANY hidden talents !!! HaHaHa !!!

Re: A Rose is a Rose
Cake decorating is such an art, of which I don't have! I took one class and decided I would forever pay anyone to decorate cakes as I need them. (The class was alot of fun and yummy.) Now pies, I'll make anytime, but I'd rather put dinner in the oven or crockpot and read a good book.

Re: A Rose is a Rose
Debbie,
I did cake decorating when my children were small. They now have their own "cakes to bake". It was a wonderful time in my life and I took the class to have something special with my older daughter. As a grandmother, it is a nice memory and may do this with one of my granddaughters. Thanks for reminding me.

Marti

Re: A Rose is a Rose
I too, took a cake decorating class - over 20 years ago (yikes- can't believe its been THAT long ago!) I'm very surprised they started you making the roses at the first class! That is usually a lesson for the end of the series of classes!
Jazmine, will have a very special memory of doing this with you,and you've also let her know "...if at first you don't succeed, try, try again" and that's something she'll never forget.
I hope as time goes by it gets easier for you, it did for me! :)

Re: A Rose is a Rose
Debbie, leaves and vines and daisies and ribbons I can do, but roses, well...they take time and a certain flick of the wrist. That comes with experience. If you can master that knitting sock thingy, I say you can master ANYTHING!!!
Can we expect a "cake decorator" in an upcoming books??? (With tips??) Annie
